I gather that at Kwong Chow Wan any price in the neighbour- hood of $8,000 per chest is looked upon as reasonable. The Chinese raw opium was partly sold here partly to Swatow and

■ little to Shanghai, which has other and cheaper sources of supply. The Persian raw opium seems to have gone mostly to Swatow, there was a certain demand from "hanghai, in Hong Kong itself there appears to have been little demand, From telegrams obtained in the case of S.S. "Tai Tak" it appears that the price of Persian Opium landed in Swatow ar this ship was £3,800 per chest of 160 lbs. Persian opium has a competitor in the shape of cheap Chinese opium, Indien opium has no competitor in China, and could if permitted be sold at a very price almost anywhere. The raw Chinese opiur cost well below $2 per tael here after paying all expenses.

The prepared opium especially the cheeper brands

seems to have been sold for use locally, the dealer at 28

Wing To Street referred in the despatch to the Secretary of State of 7th July was apparently a sub-agent of the firm at

present under discussion, a large amount of the opium seized

at that house bore the marks of this firm, and an account is

found in the firm's books under the name of the man who was

ascertained to be master of the home at 28 Wing Wo Street. Some prepared opium especially that made from Persian opium went to Swatow, apparently none went $ Shanghai, doubtless there are many boiling establishments there who would make their special blend of Indian or Persian and Szechuan opium, which is considered to be of high grade. The Lam Kei mark would all go to Manila or United States of America. Apparently the firm considered their own chop Tin Shing was well know in United States of America but I have never come across any opiur of this mark which was going to that destination, it is possible that Tin Shing labels vere removed in Hongkong and the familiar Lam Kei labele put on in their place in Hongkong. Since the illicit opium trade
